People celebrate first-ever 'Delhi Pooram'

New Delhi, May 6 (UNI) People in the capital today witnessed the first-ever 'Delhi Pooram' with caparisoned elephants and parasols accompanied by 'panchavadhyam' and fireworks.

It was a rare sight for the hundreds of people who turned out at the Kerala House premises bringing back memories of the famous 'Thrissur Poorm' which is being celebrated tomorrow.

Percussionists and trumpeteers specially brought from Kerala enthralled the gathering that included former chief minister A K Antony.

Indian Council for Cultural Relations President Karan Singh was the Chief Guest at the function, organised by the Delhi Panchavadhyam Trust.

An ardent Pooram fan, Mr Antony said it is an occasion for the Delhi Malayalees who don't get the opportunity to witness the 'Trichur Pooram'.

Musician Leela Omchery were honoured with a lifetime achievement award for her contribution to music and other art forms during the occasion.

Five senior artists from Kerala - Kalamandalam Unnikrishnan, Sadanam Muruka Jyoti, Unnikrishna Poduval, Pallassana Unni Marar and Cheruthazam Kunhirama Marar - were also honoured.
