Patthalgaon, Chhattisgarh, Mar 31 (UNI) It was a sight that would have made Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, sit up and take notice.

The excise department created a river of liquor on March 28 near Kansabel in Jashpur district. Throughout the day, a crowd of villagers watched liquor flowing in a previously dry 'nullah' near Jhanda Ghat along the Patthalgaon-Jashpur main road but a stern vigil by 'men in khaki' prevented tipplers from raising toasts.

''The liquor seized during the financial year is destroyed by dumping it on the sand in the 'nullah','' Patthalgaon's Assistant Excise Officer Dinesh Rathore told UNI.

A truckload of foreign liquor, 390 boxes costing about Rs 15 lakh, was seized near Kansabel.
