Badwani,MP, Mar 16: A colony at Pansemal in this district has a 'Ghar Jamai (resident son-in-law)' living in almost every home and the colony has been named 'Jamai Nagar'.

Pansemal resident lawyer Dinesh Joshi and former nagar panchayat President Rajendra Agrawal said many homes in Pansemal have a tradition of 'ghar jamais'.

The colony is inhabited by members of Bhoi, Koli, Maratha, Mahajan and tribal communities with most residents being labourers or vendors.

Various factors like wives being unable to adjust with in-laws or lack of employment compel force husbands to start living at their wives' home.

The colony with more than 100 houses has about 75 'ghar jamais'.

The 'ghar jamais' are deeply respected and referred to by the name of their villages -- for example, someone from Modatlai village is called 'Mortaya,' while someone from Kondawal village is referred to as 'Kondaya.' The son-in-laws are satisfied with the respect and employment opportunities available to them.

Some houses at Nagalvadi town in this district have seen 'ghar jamais' since the past four generations. A member of one such house, Manoj Malviya, said his father came as 'ghar jamai' and his brother-in-law is a 'ghar jamai' at present.

There are about 100 'ghar jamais' in 60-70 families in Nagalvadi town. Husbands of 15 of the 40 women married this year have become 'ghar jamais'.

A number of 'ghar jamais' are also living in this district's Niwali and Palsood area.
