Centre to spend Rs 262 crore to address horticulture dev in NE

Aizawl, Mar 16: The Ministry of Agriculture has released Rs 262 crore for the implementation of various horticulture schemes in the NE region during this year.

The project aims giving flexibility to develop and pursue activities on the basis of their regional priorities, the official sources here informed.

The approved pattern of assistance is in the ration of 90:10 for the Centre and states respectively, except in the case of NE region, where states were given one hundred per cent central assistance.

Initially, the major components under the mission are the supply of basic seed and planting material, technology standardisation, refinement on farm demonstration and training.

The second stage would be to increase the production and productivity of horticulture crops by adoption of improved production technologies.

Post harvest management and marketing-gointly coordinated by department of agriculture and cooperation, implemented by directorate and marketing and inspection, national horticulture board, would be the final phase of the mission, officials said, adding besides marketing, efficient post-harvest management techniques, which include development of cold storage facilities and efficient transportation.

The official sources also pointed out that the Centre has so far allocated more than Rs 500 crore for various horticultural development in NE, from the total Rs 854 crore during the tenth five year plan.
