Proud Clinton says he saw Chelsea on TV

By Super

Aboard Air Force One: US President Bill Clinton boasted like a proud father on Thursday about seeing his daughter Chelsea on television at the Olympics.

In a chat with reporters aboard Air Force One, Clinton said he was watching late night coverage of the Olympics on Wednesday when he saw his own daughter, who is in Sydney as part of the official US delegation to the games.

A proud Clinton, who was up late at the White House to watch the Olympic volleyball competition, said he called first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in New York after seeing some footage of Chelsea on the television.

"I was watching volleyball and they showed the young woman winning the butterfly, then they showed Chelsea," said Clinton, whose daughter attends Stanford University with Misty Hyman, the US swimmer who won the 200 metres butterfly race.

"They showed a picture of Chelsea, then the guy did an interview of (Hyman) and the whole first part of the interview was whether she knew Chelsea or not," he said. "She said they were friends - she said some really nice things about Chelsea."

Clinton said Chelsea, who is not enrolled in the current session at Stanford so that she can spend more time with her father during the final months of his presidency and with her mother who is running for the US Senate seat from New York, was enjoying her time in Sydney.

"She's been having a good time," he said, adding that she wanted to extend her stay in Sydney by a few days. "She's always loved the Olympics ever since she was tiny," he said. "She knows a lot of the swimmers - a lot of the swimmers are from Stanford ... and I know she knows a lot of them."
